At least 15 people have been killed in a renewed attack by armed herdsmen in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, leaving several others injured and many missing, according to local reports.

The attack, which occurred just three weeks after a similar incident in Ayilamo town, Tombo Council Ward, took place on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m., sparking fear among residents and forcing many to flee their homes.

Community leader Chief Joseph Anawa reported that the assault was carried out by heavily armed attackers who stormed Anyiin town with over 200 men, brandishing AK-47 rifles and other weapons. He said, “Militia herdsmen unleashed terror on Anyiin town, leaving more than 15 people dead, several injured, and others missing.”

Among those killed were retired primary school supervisor Mr. Orihundu Ati, as well as the son of the Kindred Head of Mbawuave, Zaki Mbatern, and the son of Tordoo Suswam, former Chief of Staff to a previous Logo LGA chairman. Also lost was the son of Mr. Uyange Chembe, younger brother to the late District Head of Ukemberagya, Zaki John Chembe.

The attackers reportedly surrounded the town, firing shots and setting an ambush as people attempted to flee. Anyiin, a central hub for the Gaambe-Tiev community, has recently become a refuge for displaced residents of neighboring communities, including Ukemberagya, Tswarev, Mbawar, Gov, Mbainange, and Tombo, who have been displaced by previous attacks.

Anawa attributed the attackers’ success to their large numbers and the lack of adequate security, calling on federal and state authorities to complete the abandoned Mobile Police Barracks project near Anyiin along the Akwana-Anyiin-Wukari road to provide better security for the area.

The Council Chairman of Logo LGA was unavailable for comment, but former Caretaker Chairman Mr. Benjamin Uzenda and ex-councilor Mr. Jonathan Tyonongo confirmed the attack, describing it as unprovoked. Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene also confirmed the incident, noting that more details would be shared as they become available.
