What once existed as rumour about plot to sack Prof Mahmood Yakubu, chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, by alleged powerful leaders including a governor from the South East appear no longer to be so after some ethnic youth leaders added their voice against such plans, naming Governor Hope Uzodinma as arrowhead of the plot.

Under the aegis of Nigerian Ethnic Youths Leaders Council (NEYLC), the coalition lashed out at the governor of Imo state over said plot to sack the INEC boss ahead of 2023 elections.

They also condemned his other plan to stop the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduct of the elections.

The NEYLC, made up of the Arewa Consultative Youths Movement (ACYM), Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Movement, Oduduwa Youths and Middle Belt Youths, which made its position known in a statement by the Ohanaeze Secretary-General and Head of Coalition’s secretariat, Nwada Ike Chiamaka, said that such move is anti-democracy.

The group, in a statement, said that credible intelligence before them shown that the governor and some people are working to achieve this agenda.

Calling on the federal government to wade into this development, the group said that such plot can truncate the nation’s democracy.

NEYLC said: “He knows for a fact that he and his party may not have their way if credible election is conducted in 2023.

“We urge all security agencies to beam their searchlight on the Governor and his activities.”

The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to also ensure that his efforts aimed at ensuring credible 2023 election is not truncated.
