The National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm after it detected a suspected fake Augmentin 625mg tablets currently in circulation across the country.
NAFDAC also called on all its formations as well as the 36 states of the federation including the FCT urging them to carry out surveillance and mop up of the fake Augmentin tablets which have spread across states already.
According to the agency, the product doesn’t meet labeling requirements adding that it has only manufacturers address and no manufacturers name inscribed on it.
Also, the manufacturing and expiry dates do not meet the acceptable format with no MAS scratch number to test and verify the product originality.
Similarly, the “gsk” logo if the fake product is not properly positioned as it is with the original product
The listed product information indicates that show the product is fake and counterfeit.
Furthermore, NAFDAC also mentioned some other features to look out for on the fake Augmentin 625mg Tabs to include: Product Name: Augmentin 625mg; Batch No.: 562626; Manufacturing date: April 2021.
Others include; Expiry date: April 2024; NAFDAC Reg No: 04-1928.
On the other hand, the agency also told how to identify the original Augmentin to include: Better product label informate, Date markings, Expiration and Manufacture dates, Batch number and NAFDAC registration number.
Wholesalers, distributors, and pharmacies were also warned to only buy medicines from authorized/licensed suppliers’
They were also cautioned to increase their alertness in the supply chain to avoid fake products entering the market as well as ensure the products authenticity, physical condition and labels are carefully checked.
NAFDAC also advise healthcare providers to be vigilant so as not to give fake products to unsuspecting patients.
Members of the public who have suspected counterfeit product stop in their custody to stop selling or using them and submit the stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
