The Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Professor Florence Banku Obi has said 45,000 applicants sought admission into the University this year, while 9305 have been offered admissions but only 7194 accepted their admissions.
Professor Obi gave the figures at the 44th matriculation ceremony of the University held on Friday December 2 2022, at the Abraham Ordia Stadium in Unical.
According to her, out of 7194 students who accepted their admissions 4104 students are females while 3053 are males.
Obi who expressed satisfaction with the federal government magnanimity towards the institution, disclosed that the University has enjoyed support under the leadership of the President Muhammadu Buhari.
She said; “As the second generation of Federal Universities, we have done well. And we have enjoyed the general support of the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari.”
The Vice chancellor explained that matriculation is a period which defines a young man’s (woman) life, from a life of poverty to one of exposure, opportunities and decency. She also added that it marks the beginning of a man”s journey to progress and success in life.
She however, warned students against social vices , lackadaisical behavior and examination malpractice.
“While you are here, we expect you to take your studies seriously, obey the rules and regulations of the University and show respect to constituted authority. Failure to do so would earn you a sanction or an outright rustication.
“To enable you graduate in flying colors, we will do our best. For the University administration is interested in your welfare but on your part, you will shun all forms of antisocial activities, such as cultism, indecent dressing, sexual harassment, stealing and drunkeness. Any student found indulging in all those acts would be handed over to the law enforcement agencies,” she said.
