In what appears to be a definite stamp of approval rating on his candidacy, Sky News, a UK-based influential news medium, profiled Labour Party, LP, candidate, Peter Obi, putting him far ahead of his competitors in more established political parties.
The medium sees as phenomenal, the rise of Obi in just a few months of announcing his intent to run under the platform of LP.
“He was relatively unknown until a few months ago, and yet Peter Obi has been propelled to frontrunner status in Nigeria’s upcoming election,” the report read.
What followed in terms of profiling his background might probably be the first to be said of any presidential candidate from Nigeria in recent times.
“Young, by Nigerian political standards, at 61, and with a reputation for probity in a country rife with corruption, he is the man to watch.
“His supporters say that if he wins the presidency in February, it will show Nigeria’s democracy is in good shape in the world’s first big election of 2023,” Sky News said about him.
The UK-based medium had access to the Labour Party candidate during a brief visit to London to speak at Chatham House.
Speaking to Dominic Waghorn, Obi said:
“We’re trying to say, and everybody can see, especially the youth, that something’s wrong and everyone can see that the country cannot continue on this trajectory leading to nowhere,” he said.
He had come to address a foreign policy crowd at Chatham House, the think tank, with an extraordinary 100,000 joining to watch online.
The report monitored by Truth Live News in London also included an interview with former UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkright.
The diplomat expressed optimism at the candidacy of Obi, saying that the world indeed can look forward to a better Nigeria under Obi.
Part of the news said that Obi is projected by his followers as the antidote to what they call “big man-ism” in Nigeria, which is the all-powerful former army general or rich man who takes power through money and influence.
