The Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, has said the institution has run out of patience and exhausted the grace given to students yet to pay up their tuition fees to do so hence, has begun its “no payment of school charges, no examinations” drive.

This was contained in a statement titled “FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR’S DESK” made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The VC said the enforcement of the “no payment of school charges, no examinations” drive would have started before now but for the plea of the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution.

“Examinations commenced on the 8th of May, 2023.

” I commend all for a hitch free exercise so far. The University’s Management, after due consultations with all stakeholders within and outside the University, will embark on enforcing the “ no payment of school charges, no examinations” drive.

“Recall that the exercise was shifted by a week following the plea by the President of the Students’ Union which was granted”, Prof. Salami said.

She however wishes all the students of the institution success in their examinations and prays for God’s guidance and protection upon them.

She added that the University of Benin Management urges all students to remain focused on the on-going examinations while they (management) continue to do their best to ensure that they achieve their goals optimally.

She also expressed her sadness over the sudden deaths of students in the university just as she expressed appreciation to the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for coming to their aid whenever the need arises which she said will not be taken for granted.

“We all woke to the sad and shocking news of the premature death of one of our best achieving students in the Faculty of Engineering and another equally valued student in the Physical Sciences Faculty.

“The University community is saddened and pray for God to grant their souls peaceful rest.

“We also pray to Almighty God to prevent such abrupt end to life’s journey from amongst us.

” Our lives are in the hands of God and He has absolute control over how far our individual life’s journey is.

“The University will continue to thank the Management of University of Benin Teaching Hospital over their continued commitment to offering quality health care services to our staff, students and others.

“The gesture we must not take for granted. The UBTH Management has advised that while they are committed to offering the highest quality of healthcare, they will no longer tolerate any disturbances in the course of discharging their duties. This we take seriously”, VC Salami said.
