Senate Passes Bill Seeking Compensation Of EndSARS Victims

The Senate advanced to second reading a bill to compensate victims of the EndSARS protest on Wednesday.

According to a ChannelsTV report, Truth Live News learnt that Senator Gershom Bassey, a PDP Senator from Cross River State, sponsored the bill.

Recall that in October 2020, EndSARS demonstrations against police brutality in the nation erupted into violence after being sabotaged by hoodlums in several regions of the nation, resulting in the deaths of innocent Nigerians, Police officers, and the destruction of both public and private properties.

Bassey, While presiding over the debate for the bill, stated that the bill aims to establish the EndSARS Victims Compensation Fund.

He said, “Distinguished colleagues, you may recall that as a result of the EndSARS nationwide protests in October 2020.

“Judicial panels of inquiry were constituted to address the demands of protesters and compensation for verified victims of the EndSARS protest.”

Following the discussion, the Senate’s President, Ahmed Lawan, submitted the Bill to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for more legislative input and a one-week report back to the full Senate.
