To honor 2023’s June 12 Democracy Day, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has pardoned 80 inmates from the state’s various prisons.

In order to allow the prisoners to reunite with their families, Governor Bago also allowed the prompt payment of their penalties.

The release of the prisoners was in accordance with the governor’s constitutionally guaranteed right to mercy, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, said in a statement made on Monday in Minna. The gesture was made to commemorate 2023 Democracy Day.

Usman said that the 80 detainees should be released due to their advanced age, poor health, and good behavior, according the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy’s recommendation.

He also urged the prisoners to avoid any actions that would land them in jail again and to take advantage of the chance to work on worthwhile projects.

He also urged them to uphold the law and engage in legal activities by taking advantage of numerous empowerment windows. He also urged the state’s citizens to use the time to consider their contributions to peace-building and support for good governance.
