Douye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa State, has called the incidents that occurred in two different parts of the nation on Sunday and resulted in the deaths of 10 Ijaw natives unfortunate.

Truth Live News noted that while six band members of well-known Ijaw musician Barrister Smooth perished in the collision on the Kogi-Abuja Road, four Bayelsa Queens Football Club fans were killed in the accident on the Kwale-Asaba route in Delta State.

In a statement released on Monday by his chief press secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, Diri referred to it as a “Black Sunday” for the Ijaw nation and Bayelsa.

He claimed that as word of the tragic events spread, the state was plunged into sadness.

The governor referred to these young people as active and making a difference in people’s lives through their musical skills as well as through supporting the state’s beloved female football club, saying that their deaths were tragic.

The statement reads in full, “On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased.

“I also commiserate with the leader of the band, Barrister Smooth.

“These are very unfortunate and sad incidents that claimed the lives of our active youths.

“It is a great loss to our state and the Ijaw nation as young talents and bread winners following their passion had suddenly departed.

“I pray that the Lord consoles the families for the painful loss that they have suffered. I also pray for quick healing and recovery for those that were injured”, Diri said.
