Network of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria (NOCSON), has called on the newly inaugurated 8th Edo State House of Assembly members to promote and sustain the rights of the citizens of the state.

The group also congratulated the members for their successful Inauguration.

This was contained in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbidi and its Secretary, Bevy Efe and made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The duo in the statement said the duty of the Legislator is to make laws that will promote the interest of the citizens of the state.

They said while making laws, they should consider the ones that protect the rights of the people.

They the impact of the 7th assembly was not adequately felt by the people of the state noting that there are clear indications that with the components of those who constitute the 8th assembly, there is going to be a vibrant house.

They added that NOCSON as a civil rights group will be willing to bring to their notice any human rights violation issues that may crop up in the state with the view of addressing it holistically.

NOCSON leadership while also congratulating the 8th assembly, emphasized the need to work with the executive arm of government for the betterment of the state adding that, working harmoniously together should not make them a rubber stamp house of assembly.

They said they should know when to draw the demarcation when the need arises as the interest of the people must come first in all that they do.

NOCSON while also congratulating the Speaker of the house, Blessing Agbebaku, maintained that they strongly believe that he will effectively steer the affairs of the 8th Assembly, foster productive debates and good legislation.

“His emergence will engender a harmonious working relationship between the executive and the legislature to advance the development of our dear state and improve the lives of Edo people,” the duo of Emmanuel Ogbidi and Bevy Efe said.
