The Kano State Police Commande has said it has arrested 300 suspected criminals terrorizing the state. It also said that 99 of them have voluntarily surrendered to the command.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Usaini Gumel, while speaking on the feat recorded, said: “This is the biggest arrest in the history of the command.”
He spoke at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, after meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr.Olukayode Egbetokun.
“We have imbibed community policing. We organised a friendly tournament between the police and the repentant youths in Kano city.
“My mission and vision as the 45th CP in Kano is not only to fight crime and criminality but also to imbibe community policing.
“It is in line with the directives of the IGP to all police commands and formations to implement community-based policing for the promotion of quality service to get rid of all forms of crimes.
“The command is applying certain initiatives in tackling the menace of the thuggery (Fadan Daba), drug Aause and other social vices.
“The community policing gave birth to football tournament between the command and the repentant youths.
“It was a collaboration with the Prevention of Infections Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS).
“The tournament started August 2, 2023, which will last for months at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.
“The YOSPIS is to promote peaceful co-existence by engaging the delinquent youths and show them that they are still welcome to communities.
“The police are to free the state of vices by the youths. The state government has put in place packages for the youths to complement the efforts of the police.
“With this tournament between the police command and the repentant youths, the command embarked on clearance operations to flush out criminals from Dala Hill in Dala Local Government. We dislodged blacksmiths fabricating weapons for hoodlums.
“A total of 99 repentant notorious thugs voluntarily surrendered themselves. They submitted their weapons and promised to continue to work with the police.
“We have launched manhunt in their hideouts. We have embarked on identification of the remnants who, refused to embrace peace by placing a bounty on each of them.
“Within four months, we arrested over 250 suspected criminals in their various hideouts, 100 weapons, 253 pieces of suspected codeine syrup, 85 suspected intoxicating injections, 200 pieces of suspected suck-and-die substances and 1,802 of other suspected illicit drugs.
“In this modern day millennium, it is not fighting the criminals alone. We need to have good relationship with the police and the public including, the stakeholders to enable us achieve our goals”, he said.
The CP further appreciated the good people of Kano State for their continuous support and co-operation just as he urge them to keep reporting suspicious movements in their localities to the police.
