The Wife of Cross River State Governor, Mrs. Eyoawan Bassey Edet Otu, has launched “Girls In Stem Project, a training programme she identified as the driving forces of progress.
Mrs. Otu who called on parents to encourage their girl-child to pick up careers in the area of Science, Technology, engineering and mathematics launched the training program at the University of Cross River (UNICROSS)in Calabar.
The first Lady said science, technology, engineering and mathematics collectively known as STEM, have become the driving forces of progress and parents should encourage their children of wards to rank up with their counterparts in India, China and America.
Represented by the state commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Justin Beshel, she explained that the initiative is part of her plans to empower brilliant young girls to break barriers and forge a part towards a bright future.
“In today’s rapidly changing world, science, technology, engineering and mathematics collectively known as STEM, have become the driving forces of progress,” she said.
She believes that Nigeria could stand the chance of exporting technology to foreign countries, if the girl-child are encouraged to choose careers in the area of science technology.
To build capacity of girls in the area of cyber technology, the Governor’s wife said “It is our responsibility to ensure that our young people are not left behind but are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to excel in STEM.”
