In a press release, Senator Dr. Walid Jibrin, a former BOT chairman of PDP and prominent figure in Nasarawa State, addressed the citizens regarding the political situation in the state. Sen. Jibrin, who is also the Sarkin Fulani of Nasarawa, expressed his concern about the recent developments and the outcomes of the 2023 elections.
During his address, Senator Jibrin discussed his observations from the 2023 election campaigns. He mentioned that the incumbent Governor, Engr. Audu Sule of the APC, faced widespread discontent from the people. The public’s dissatisfaction was evident through protests and cold receptions during campaign events, attributed to unfulfilled promises and poor governance.
Sen. Jibrin also pointed out that Governor Sule had initially pledged to serve only one term and then relocate abroad, which further eroded public trust in his second term.
The results of the elections reflected the discontent, with the APC performing poorly in both the Presidential and Governorship elections. Notably, the PDP’s Dr. David Ombugadu garnered significant support.
However, the controversy arose when Governor Sule refused to concede defeat, blaming his loss on religious differences rather than accepting the people’s verdict. Sen. Jibrin emphasized that Dr. Ombugadu enjoys support from both Muslims and Christians in the state, reinforcing the need for unity and collaboration among different religious communities.
Senator Jibrin invoked historical examples, such as the Prophet Muhammad’s message of peace and unity between Muslims and non-Muslims, to highlight the importance of harmony and fair governance in Nasarawa State.
In conclusion, Senator Walid Jibrin stressed the need for accepting the election results based on merit, adherence to the rule of law, and a focus on unity and cooperation among the state’s diverse population. He called on both Muslims and Christians to work together for the prosperity and development of Nasarawa State, emphasizing that true Islam promotes justice and fairness, not religious division.
The press release came at a time where the state has an opportunity to unite, irrespective of religious affiliations, for the betterment of the people and the promotion of democracy and good governance.
