U.S. Strikes Iranian Weapon Facilities in Eastern Syria

The US has carried out air strikes against two weapons and ammunition storage facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

The Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, said the strikes were in response to recent attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups.

US base at Kharab al-Jir in Syria was attacked twice in two days, and a base in Western Iraq was also hit.

More than a dozen small-scale strikes on US bases in the region have wounded 24 US soldiers and caused the death of one civilian contractor.

The Secretary said the US strikes were “separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.”

Iran did not immediately comment.

According to BBC report, Truthlive news learnt that the strikes took place on Friday at around 04:30 local time (01:30 GMT) near Abu Kamal, a town on the border with Iraq.

It is not yet known if there were any casualties from the attacks.

“These precision self-defence strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17,” Mr Austin said.

Recall that U.S. government had sent two carrier strike group, early October to the eastern Mediterranean Sea to ensure that the Israel-Hamas fighting does not expand into a wider regional conflict.

According to report, U.S. warships are not intended to join the fighting in Gaza or take part in Israeli operations but to project military strength in the region.
