The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light to allocate N5.9 billion for the construction of access roads essential for the Abuja light rail system. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, shared this announcement after the Council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Minister emphasized the significance of these access roads in line with President’s plan to utilize the Abuja light rail, stating, “Today, Council approved the contract for the construction of access roads for the Abuja light rail. You are aware that Mr. President has given the directive that he wants to ride on the metro line.”
Additionally, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, presented a proposal for the approval of coastal roads extending from Lagos to Port Harcourt and Cross River. The Council also gave the nod for road projects on the Trans-Sahara route from Enugu to Cameroon and the Badagry to Sokoto route. These projects will adopt the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing model for funding.
Umahi highlighted that the specific cost for these projects is yet to be determined, as they will undergo feasibility studies, surveys, and consultations with affected states and communities before further approvals are sought from the Federal Executive Council.
