CONAKRY, Guinea – Former leader of Guinea’s military government, Moussa Dadis Camara, who escaped from the central prison in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, has been recaptured, according to Guinean armed forces and his lawyer.
Recall that Gunmen stormed the main prison in Guinea’s capital early Saturday and freed former dictator Moussa “Dadis” Camara and several others.
Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, the chief of staff and General of the Armed Forces of the Guinean transitional government, who confirmed this in a statement, explained that Mr Camara is safe and sound and is now back in the central prison of Conakry.
Also, confirming the development, One of Camara’s lawyers, Jocamey Haba, told AFP his client was back behind bars.
Among the others who escaped were Claude Pivi and Blaise Goumou, who along with Camara had been detained on charges in connection with a 2009 stadium massacre that left 157 people dead.
“We will find them. And those responsible will be held accountable,” Justice Minister Charles Alphonse Wright, told local Radio Fim FM several hours after heavy gunfire erupted in the Kaloum district of the capital, Conakry.
A fourth prisoner, Moussa Thiegboro Camara, already has been recaptured, Wright added.
Moussa Dadis Camara had come to power in a 2008 coup d’état following the death of longtime dictator Lansana Conte.
He had spent several years in exile after surviving an assassination attempt by one of his bodyguards before returning to Guinea in late 2021.
Camara faced accusations of violently suppressing protests in Conakry on September 28, 2009, leading to the tragic deaths of more than 150 people and over 1,000 injuries.
