The 10th Senate has urgently called upon top security officials to address the recent wave of violence in Plateau state. Among those summoned are Taoreed Lagbaja, chief of army staff; Hassan Abubakar, chief of air staff; Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS); and Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of the police (IGP).
Truth Live News gathered that Senator Diiket Plang, representing Plateau central, brought the matter to the forefront during a Senate session on Saturday. The security chiefs are expected to participate in a closed-door session to provide insights into the situation.
The tragic events unfolded in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi LGAs of Plateau state, where armed assailants targeted 17 communities. The attacks, spanning December 23 to 24, coincided with residents preparing for Christmas, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of homes, and widespread looting.
Plang, in his motion, expressed profound dismay at the magnitude of displacement caused by the attacks. Titus Zam, senator representing Benue north-west, echoed concerns during the debate, asserting that the current service chiefs seem to lack a comprehensive understanding of the country’s security landscape.
Zam lamented, “Nigeria is in trouble. The service chiefs that appeared before this senate seemed to know what they were doing. Six months down the road, it appears that there is no difference. I think we should call these service chiefs again. In my district, three LGAs out of seven are already overrun.”
