A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), identified as Samuel, tragically collapsed and passed away while watching the thrilling AFCON match between Nigeria and South Africa.

Samuel, who was serving in Adamawa State, sadly lost his life before witnessing Nigeria’s victory in the penalty shootout that secured their spot in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

An eyewitness, sharing the heartbreaking news on Facebook, recounted how Samuel collapsed during the celebration of Nigeria’s semi-final win.

“We mourn the loss of a fellow Nigerian during our jubilation over South Africa’s defeat today at our Sports Viewing Center (SVC) in Numan.

“The corps member, serving in Numan from Kaduna, collapsed before the match-winning goal. Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he passed away before reaching Numan General Hospital. May his soul rest in peace,” the post stated.

Confirming the tragic incident, NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Mr. Jingi Dennis, expressed sorrow over Samuel’s untimely demise.

“I received the heartbreaking news of his passing last night and hope to gather more details today. According to his companions at the match, the late corps member expressed discomfort watching penalty shootouts, bowed his head, and suddenly collapsed.

“He was pronounced dead at Numan General Hospital by the attending physician,” Dennis said.

At the time of this report the Police Public Relations Officer is yet to give report on this incident.
