The president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o, has on Wednesday confirmed that Rigobert Song has ended his tenure as the head coach of Cameroon.

He attributed the development to Cameroon’s disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16 against eventual runners-up Nigeria in January.

“We have not met our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves extending the contract (with Song),” Eto’o told France 24.

Song, a former teammate of Eto’o in the national team, took charge as Cameroon boss in February 2022.

While he guided the Indomitable Lions to a thrilling playoff victory over Algeria in extra time, securing their spot in the Qatar World Cup, Cameroon’s campaign ended in disappointment as they failed to progress past the group stage, despite defeating Brazil in a surprising upset.

“Song contributed significantly to this team,” remarked Eto’o. “Now, we must focus on the future.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Song managed to secure only six wins out of 23 matches during his tenure.
