In a significant blow to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Victoria Oma Amu, a prominent former gubernatorial aspirant in Edo State, has tendered her resignation from the party. Her departure comes amidst a growing wave of defections and resignations within the APC, signaling a shift in political allegiances.
In a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of APC Ward 4, Owan West Local Government Area, Edo State, and made available to Truth Live News, Amu cited personal and family reasons for her decision to leave the party.
She expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her by the APC, including serving as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Social Mobilization under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for seven years, and later as SSA to Governor Godwin Obaseki for one year. Amu highlighted her active participation in electoral contests, having run for the House of Assembly in 2022 and recently in the 2024 gubernatorial race, both under the APC banner.
Amidst her resignation, she called upon her friends, supporters, and well-wishers to respect her decision, emphasizing the need to redefine the destiny of the state at this critical juncture.
The departure of Amu is just one instance in a series of defections and resignations that have plagued the APC in recent times. This trend unearths a growing discontent and disillusionment among party members, hinting at a divergence in political ideologies and interests.
While some attribute the exodus from the APC to the faltering start of the Tinubu administration, others point to the escalating cost of living and the perceived lackluster performance of the party’s senator- turned- gubernatorial candidates. The dismissal of the deputy governorship candidate, who faced allegations of fraud during his tenure as a commissioner by Senator Oshiomhole, the godfather of APC in Edo state, has further fueled speculation and criticism.
Stakeholders and political pundits alike are left perplexed by the apparent self-inflicted harm within the APC, as the party grapples with internal strife and external challenges.
