Palpable tension grips the camp of the Labour Party in Edo State as a lawsuit filed by concerned voters threatens to derail the gubernatorial aspirations of Olumide Akpata.
The lawsuit, lodged before the Edo State High Court, alleges fraudulent misrepresentation and deception of the electorate, stemming from Akpata’s purported use of a different identity for electoral gains.
In a dramatic turn of events, the claimants, represented by Prof Ike Aghaosa, Comr Osadebamen Okhilua, and Comrade Marxist Sunday Ogun, contend that Akpata’s true civil name is Anthony Olumide Akpata, not Osaigbovo Olumide Akpata as he presents himself. The case, registered under suit no. B/372/2024, is scheduled for hearing on Monday, May 06, 2024, before Justice Joy Okeaya-Inneh of the Edo State High Court.
The crux of the matter lies in Akpata’s alleged manipulation of his identity for electoral advantage. The claimants demand that Akpata be barred from participating in the forthcoming gubernatorial polls and issue an unreserved apology to the aggrieved voters. Furthermore, they seek corrective measures, including the publication of a corrigendum in various media outlets and a punitive fine of five million naira.
Exhibits accompanying the lawsuit paint a compelling picture. Akpata’s affidavit of support in a previous legal battle identifies him as Olumide Anthony Akpata, contradicting the identity he now asserts. Moreover, official documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) list his name as Anthony Olumide Akpata, further muddying the waters of his identity crisis.
A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, raised pertinent questions about Akpata’s sudden transformation from Anthony to Osaigbovo. They questioned the authenticity of Akpata’s claims and highlighted inconsistencies in his public persona. With billboards adorned with the disputed name, Edo voters are left grappling with uncertainty about the true identity of their prospective leader.
The lawsuit underscores the significance of transparency and honesty in electoral processes. The claimants emphasize their right to truthful communication from political candidates and parties, urging the court to uphold integrity in the electoral arena.
