Inhabitants of Rano town, one of the dissolved Emirate councils in Kano State, have embarked on a peaceful protest demanding the immediate restoration of the dissolved Emirate Councils and the reinstatement of Aminu Ado-Bayero.

The protesters also observed two raka’at of congregational prayers at the Emir’s palace in Rano, according to reports.

They accused the Kano State Government and members of the State House of Assembly of implementing an unpopular policy by dissolving the emirates.

The protesters marched through Rano town, holding placards that insisted the dissolution of the emirate would reverse the development recorded in the emirate so far.

This protest followed a similar one held in the Gaya Emirate Council on Sunday, where protesters also rejected the dissolution of their Emirate.

It was also recall that on Sunday, a mild protest was also recorded in the Nasarawa Area of Kano metropolis. The protesters marched towards the Government House area before being dispersed.

They urged Governor Abba Yusuf to respect the court’s order restraining him from reinstating dethroned Emir Lamido Sanusi.

One of the leaders of the group, Aminu Umar, explained that the protest was in solidarity with the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero.

“We don’t know any emir in the state aside from Aminu Ado Bayero. He didn’t commit any offence to warrant his dethronement. It’s unfortunate that the governor, who was in place by court pronouncement, is going against court order,” Mr Umar said.

The protesters also burned used tyres on the state road as part of their activities to register their disagreement over the dissolution of the five emirates. They also observed two raka’at of prayer at the premises of the Emir’s palace.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up within the metropolis of Kano following intelligence reports indicating a potential for a large protest in the state capital.

Kano State Police Commissioner Mohammed Usaini Gumel confirmed the intelligence but assured that the police were on top of the situation.
