In a move set to disrupt the nation’s workforce, members of the organized labor unions have declared an indefinite strike starting midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
This announcement follows the federal government’s refusal to raise the minimum wage from N60,000, a demand that has been at the forefront of labor negotiations for months.
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made the declaration during a press conference at Labour House in Abuja. He emphasized the unions’ frustration and the government’s failure to address the pressing economic needs of Nigerian workers.
“After extensive deliberations and in light of the government’s continued refusal to adjust the minimum wage, we have no choice but to embark on an indefinite strike. This action is necessary to advocate for the rights and welfare of our workers,” Ajaero stated firmly.
The proposed strike is expected to have a significant impact on various sectors, including transportation, healthcare, and public services, as millions of workers join the protest. The NLC has urged its members nationwide to prepare for full participation, warning that any attempts to undermine the strike will be met with strong resistance.
