In a remarkable show of appreciation, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo, has commended Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his exceptional commitment to workers’ welfare, notably increasing the minimum wage to N70,000 – the highest in Nigeria.
During a courtesy visit at the Government House in Benin City, Comrade Osifo lauded Governor Obaseki’s administration for its significant achievements over the past seven and a half years.
“This is the first courtesy call we are paying to any governor in Nigeria. On several occasions, we have been invited by other State Governors, but our visits are contingent on their records of performance, particularly regarding workers’ welfare. We are here to thank you for the outstanding support you have shown to the workers of Edo State,” Comrade Osifo remarked.
Osifo underscored the significance of the new labour movement secretariat commissioned by Governor Obaseki, describing it as “one of the best, if not the best, in Nigeria.”
The TUC President also expressed gratitude for the governor’s unilateral decision to raise the minimum wage without necessitating negotiations, noting the rarity and commendable nature of such an act.
“Increasing the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 unilaterally was a noteworthy gesture. It’s a testament to the governor’s commitment to the welfare of workers. Despite expectations, no other state has followed this example. However, you assured that if the federal government mandates a higher minimum wage, Edo State will be ready to comply,” Osifo added.
Governor Obaseki responded with appreciation for the recognition from the TUC, expressing pride in the state’s history and contributions to the trade union movement in Nigeria. “Edo State has a rich tradition in trade unionism. Leaders like Micheal Imodu and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole have paved the way, and we are proud to continue this legacy,” he said.
Obaseki emphasized the importance of harmonious government-labour relations, highlighting that labour is a crucial factor of production that must be respected and adequately compensated.
“We believe that government-labour tensions are unnecessary. Labour is a vital part of our production system, and it deserves fair treatment and timely remuneration,” he stated.
