Hon. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo, the deputy governor of Edo State, has been honored with the Fellowship Award from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
The ceremony took place in Abuja, recognizing Omobayo’s outstanding contributions to the engineering profession.
In his address, Omobayo, an engineer by training, described receiving the fellowship as the “pinnacle of recognition” within the engineering community, comparable to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title in the legal profession. He expressed his gratitude for the award, noting that it would motivate him to reach even greater professional heights.
“The fellowship symbolizes fulfillment in character, learning, and practice,” Omobayo said. “It represents years of hard work and invaluable contributions to society, and it calls for greater responsibility.”
He also highlighted the personal significance of the award, mentioning that he was one of the youngest recipients and that he was honored alongside his former university professor, who had taught him engineering mathematics.
Omobayo concluded his speech by thanking God and the NSE for the opportunity to achieve the peak of his political and engineering career, attributing his success to discipline and hard work.
Also Speaking, NSE President Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntola emphasized the important role of the new fellows in improving construction standards in Nigeria. She urged them to demonstrate expertise, maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ethics, and set an example for the next generation of engineers.
The fellowship award comes shortly after Omobayo’s 38th birthday on July 19, making it a fitting birthday gift for the deputy governor, who hails from Akoko Edo. Omobayo assumed his role on April 8, following the impeachment of the former deputy governor, Hon. Philip Shuaib.
Observers have praised Omobayo’s rapid rise in politics, attributing it to his humble disposition and effective approach to governance. He has been commended for his admirable performance in office and his resistance to becoming power-hungry, a trait that has distinguished him from his predecessors.
