In a festive atmosphere on Sunday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) welcomed more than 300 defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, and other smaller political parties at its Airport Road secretariat in Benin City.
The defectors, led by Princess Uzoma Okoli, Mr. Chukwenonso Nnabuefe, Matthew Esosa, and Chioma Uche from the Labour Party, along with Ernest Aburime and Prophetess Divine Agete from the APC, cited their confidence in PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, as their primary reason for switching parties. They praised Ighodalo for his clear plan to ensure security and prosperity in Edo State.
They also highlighted the influence of Ighodalo’s wife, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, whose enthusiasm and appeal were convincing factors in their decision.
The defectors lauded Ighodalo’s proven track record, describing him as a candidate with the capacity, credibility, and competence to govern Edo State effectively. They emphasized that his vision for progress, peace, and economic growth sets him apart from other candidates.
Criticizing the APC for causing hardship to Nigerians, the defectors expressed their belief that only Dr. Ighodalo can sustain the progress enjoyed in Edo State. The group, primarily composed of women, celebrated their new political allegiance by dancing to campaign tunes and brandishing their voter cards.
Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the state chairman of the PDP, welcomed the defectors and commended their courage to join the party. He encouraged them to return to their respective wards and work towards the success of the PDP in the upcoming election on September 21, emphasizing that the PDP is the only party that can deliver the dividends of democracy.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, addressing the jubilant crowd, thanked the defectors for their decision to join the PDP, calling it the only true progressive party in the country. She urged everyone to come out en masse to vote for the PDP on September 21.
Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Director-General of the PDP Governorship Campaign Council, also welcomed the defectors, praising their wise decision to join a party that genuinely cares about the people of Edo State.
