Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, inaugurated the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, a move which aimed towards fostering closer collaboration between the church and government.
The board will be headed by Apst. Gen. Dr. Irekpono Omoike, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Edo State Chapter.
The ceremony, held at the Government House in Benin City, saw Governor Obaseki underscore the critical role of the church in the state, praising its contributions to both spiritual and social development. The governor took the opportunity to express gratitude to CAN for its partnership in the Christian Feeding Programme (CFP), while also addressing political interference in the initiative.
“I can’t thank CAN enough for working with me on the Christian Feeding Programme,” Obaseki said. “Let me apologize for the actions of misguided political actors who tried to drag your good work into politics. It saddened me to hear claims that undermined the selfless efforts you have made.”
The governor highlighted the long-awaited inauguration of the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, which had been delayed due to restructuring within the government. “Christianity is a solid pillar for our people and our administration,” Obaseki remarked, adding that the church serves as a “veritable tool” to reach the state’s citizens, understanding their challenges and helping guide policies.
Obaseki emphasized the deep bond between the state and the clergy, saying, “We see the board beyond just organizing pilgrimages. It will help organize the Christian body, fostering development and progress in Edo State.”
In his response, Apst. Gen. Dr. Irekpono Omoike expressed gratitude for the governor’s trust, pledging to lead the board with diligence and a commitment to excellence. “We will deliver efficiently on our duties and responsibilities,” Omoike affirmed, marking the start of a new era in the relationship between the state and its Christian community.
