In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has upheld Ahmed Usman Ododo’s victory in the Kogi State governorship election held on November 11, 2023. A five-member panel dismissed the appeal filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Yakubu Muritala Ajaka, citing lack of merit.

Justice Sadiq Umar, who delivered the lead judgment, resolved all three issues against the appellants, affirming Ododo’s win. This judgment comes after the Supreme Court reserved its ruling on Monday, following final arguments from all parties.

Ajaka had sought to overturn the tribunal and appellate court rulings, which dismissed his petition against Ododo. He alleged over-voting, forged documents, and demanded a new election in five LGAs. However, the tribunal found his claims lacking, ruling that the evidence presented was insufficient.

With 446,237 votes, Ododo had been declared the winner by INEC, defeating Ajaka’s 259,052 votes. The Supreme Court’s judgment solidifies Ododo’s position as the rightful Governor of Kogi State, bringing closure to the electoral dispute.
