Benin City, Edo State
Following the contentious gubernatorial election in Edo State held on September 21st, Governor Godwin Obaseki has called for calm amid growing tension and dissatisfaction among the electorate. The election, which saw rigorous campaigns from various political parties, has left many residents feeling disillusioned and frustrated, with some accusing federal forces of interference.
In a statement released earlier today, and made available to Truth Live News, Governor Obaseki expressed his deep concern over the outcome of the election, acknowledging the widespread disappointment among Edo citizens. He described the situation as a “travesty of democracy,” highlighting the alleged use of “brute force” and “reckless disregard for processes and law” in the conduct of the election.
“The attractive thing about democracy is the power it bestows on the people to choose who governs them,” Governor Obaseki said. “When this power is blatantly seized from the people, it is not just a tragedy, but a travesty of democracy.”
Despite the heightened emotions, the governor urged citizens to remain peaceful and avoid any form of violence or destruction of property. He assured the public that justice will ultimately prevail and urged those aggrieved to seek redress through legal means.
“In a democracy, there are safeguards for addressing grievances, and we hope that those affected will seek resolution for this blatant disregard of law and process,” he stated.
Governor Obaseki’s call for calm comes amid reports of protests and unrest in parts of the state, with many residents feeling disenfranchised. The governor stressed the importance of maintaining peace and continuing with lawful activities while the situation is being addressed.
“To all the good people of Edo State who feel vexed and violated at this time, I implore you to go about your lawful businesses and rest assured of the commitment of our government to your wellbeing and security,” Obaseki added.
The governor concluded his statement by reaffirming his dedication to the people of Edo State and expressing confidence in the eventual triumph of justice.
The outcome of the election remains a contentious issue, with opposition parties and their supporters raising questions about the integrity of the process. However, Governor Obaseki’s message emphasizes patience and the pursuit of justice through legal channels rather than violence.
As Edo State waits for the next steps, the governor’s appeal for calm aims to prevent further escalation of tensions in the state.
