The released #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters shared their experience of spending 68 days in Kuje Prison in Abuja, where their diet consisted mainly of beans and garri.
Following the August protests, 114 suspects were released to the governors of Kano and Kaduna states by the Federal Government on Tuesday.
The detainees were discharged by the Abuja Federal High Court and handed over to the governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Federal Government dropped the treason charges against the protesters after widespread criticism from Nigerians.
Some protesters reunited with their families on Wednesday.
Hassan Muhammad, one of the protesters and a resident of Ghana Road in Malali, Kaduna North Local Government Area, recounted his to newsmen: “I was arrested on August 5, 2024, during the #EndBadGovernance protest at Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna.
“After our arrest, we were taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning and then transferred to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).
“We spent 18 days at the FCID before being moved to Kuje Prison, where we spent 68 days.
“The experience was traumatic, and the food was inadequate, consisting mainly of beans and garri during our time there.”
