Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a major raid on wine shops across Nasarawa state, seizing counterfeit and adulterated alcohol valued at over ₦41.2 million.
The operation, which targeted shops in the Mararaba market, New Nyanya, and Masaka areas, focused on removing counterfeit wines and spirits from the market.
According to a statement posted by NAFDAC on its official X page on Monday, the agency’s enforcement team is now investigating the importers and manufacturers involved in the production and distribution of these counterfeit drinks.
NAFDAC expressed concern over the health risks posed by fake alcohol products, warning that these adulterated drinks often contain dangerous ingredients that can harm consumers. In recent years, there has been a rise in cases of fake alcoholic beverages, leading to incidents of poisoning and other severe health complications.
NAFDAC urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious products to the nearest NAFDAC office. “We appeal to all Nigerians to exercise caution when purchasing wines and spirits and to report any questionable products for immediate action,” the agency said.
This operation marks NAFDAC’s ongoing effort to crack down on counterfeit products and protect public health. The agency is also planning further inspections across the country, aiming to eliminate the circulation of fake and potentially harmful goods.
