The National Examinations Council (NECO) has taken a significant step toward solidifying Nigeria’s position as a leader in Africa by accrediting schools in Niger Republic and Equatorial Guinea to conduct its Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Truth Live News gathered that this August development showcases NECO’s global ambitions and demonstrates Nigeria’s capacity to export quality education and standardized assessments across the continent.

NECO’s accreditation team conducted rigorous evaluations of schools in these countries, inspecting classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other key facilities to ensure compliance with its high standards. Following these assessments, full accreditation status was granted. Notably, Diffa, Niger Republic, now hosts NECO’s first-ever SSCE external center outside Nigeria, marking a historic expansion for the council.

“This accreditation is a testament to NECO’s commitment to providing quality education and assessment beyond Nigeria’s shores,” said Mr. Azeez Sani, NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations.

A Glimpse of Nigeria’s Potential
NECO’s expansion into neighboring countries is a reflection of the promise Nigeria holds to lead Africa in areas beyond its natural resources. By leveraging its expertise in education and examination standards, the country is positioning itself as a hub of academic excellence on the continent.

The recent results from NECO’s 2024 SSCE further emphasize this potential. With 60.55% of candidates achieving at least five credits, including English and Mathematics, the council continues to meet global benchmarks for academic evaluation. However, consistent results over recent years also highlight the need for deeper systemic reforms to boost overall performance.

While NECO’s success is a bright spot, it serves as a reminder of the broader potential Nigeria can unlock if it curbs its longstanding issues with corruption. Addressing these challenges could enable the country to lead not just in education but in innovation, governance, and economic development across Africa.

By extending its educational services to other African nations, Nigeria is demonstrating what is possible when expertise meets integrity. If Nigeria can translate these strides into other sectors, the nation has every potential to truly lead Africa into a brighter future.

NECO’s expansion is good news, showcasing Nigeria’s ability to shape the continent’s future positively. It is a sign of what can be achieved if the country continues to invest in its strengths and overcome the hurdles that have held it back.
