The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has stated that the northern region of Nigeria must wait until 2031 before vying for the presidency.

Speaking on Television Continental on Sunday, Akume dismissed the possibility of the North producing the president in 2027, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu, a Southerner, should be allowed to complete two terms in office.

He remarked, “President Tinubu, as a Southerner, should be allowed to have a second term. Those eyeing the presidency from the North in 2027 should look beyond that year and wait till 2031.”

Referring to potential candidates, Akume added, “If it is the will of God for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become President of Nigeria, even at the age of 90, he can achieve it. However, Northern aspirants must hold off until after 2027.”

The SGF also addressed Nigeria’s tax reform bills, urging Nigerians to support their legislative passage. He assured the public that the reforms were designed for the nation’s benefit and would lead to economic growth once enacted.

“President Tinubu’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the harmonization of foreign exchange rates, are strategic measures to rebuild the economy. While it is easy to destroy, rebuilding takes effort. Nigerians will soon see the results of these reforms,” Akume stated.

He defended President Tinubu’s leadership, asserting that the President has maintained goodwill despite the challenges posed by recent economic policies. Akume called on citizens to trust in the administration’s efforts, which aim to reposition the nation for sustainable growth.
