The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported a fatal accident that occurred at Ilubirin, along the Third Mainland Bridge, involving a J5 Ford bus and a Mercedes truck. The crash, which took place on Monday, claimed one life and left five others injured.
In an official statement, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, disclosed that the accident was caused by reckless driving on the part of the J5 Ford bus driver, who lost control of the vehicle. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus, loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, resulting in a collision with the Mercedes truck.
LASTMA officials, led by General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, quickly responded to the scene and, with the help of bystanders, rescued four victims from the wreckage. Unfortunately, one individual, who was trapped inside the bus, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. All the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the vehicles involved were towed away to restore traffic flow.
Mr. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, especially during the holiday season, emphasizing the importance of road safety to prevent similar tragedies.
