An unconfirmed number of people are feared dead, with several others injured, following a tragic stampede on Saturday at the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident reportedly occurred during the distribution of palliatives, including rice, vegetable oil, and cash, donated by a community member, Chief Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson.

The stampede erupted as a massive crowd gathered at the centre’s gate, struggling to gain entry.

Shocking video footage obtained by Truthlive News shows lifeless bodies being transported in a vehicle belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

It was gathered that the victims, many of whom were women and children, were caught in the chaos of the uncontrollable crowd.

Some of the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Charles Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to the Anambra State Governor, confirmed the incident. “The state government is closely monitoring the situation and will issue a statement shortly,” he said.

Authorities have yet to release the exact number of casualties as investigations continue.
