Abuja, Nigeria
On December 25, 2024, a military airstrike in Sokoto State tragically resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians and injuries to many others.
Truth Live News gathered the unfortunate incident occurred in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area, where military jets were reportedly targeting Lakurawa terrorists. However, local residents and officials have labeled the attack as “erroneous,” highlighting the devastating impact on innocent villagers.
This incident is not isolated. In September 2024, an airstrike in Kaduna State mistakenly struck a village, killing at least 24 civilians. The Nigerian Air Force, citing credible intelligence and surveillance, launched an investigation into the incident.
Earlier, in December 2023, a drone strike in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, killed at least 88 civilians during a religious celebration. Amnesty International reported over 120 fatalities, calling for thorough investigations and accountability.
These incidents brings to light the challenges and complexities of Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations, particularly concerning the accuracy of intelligence and the execution of airstrikes. The recurring nature of such tragedies raises critical questions about the protocols in place to prevent civilian casualties and the measures taken to ensure accountability when errors occur.
Human rights organizations have consistently called for transparent investigations into these incidents. They emphasize the need for the Nigerian military to adopt more stringent measures to safeguard civilian lives during operations against insurgents and bandits. The Sokoto airstrike adds to a growing list of civilian casualties resulting from military actions, highlighting an urgent need for policy reassessment and improved operational strategies.
In response to the Sokoto incident, the Nigerian Air Force has pledged a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts and prevent future occurrences. Governor Ahmed Aliyu has also expressed condolences to the affected families and announced assistance, including financial support and coverage of medical expenses for the injured.
As Nigeria continues its fight against terrorism and banditry, the imperative to protect civilian lives remains paramount. The recent airstrike in Sokoto serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of military errors and the pressing need for enhanced precision and accountability in counterterrorism operations.
