A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N10 million bail to human rights activist Olamide Thomas, who was arrested for allegedly threatening Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as well as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi in a viral social media post.

Presiding over the case, Justice Emeka Nwite ruled on Monday that Thomas could be released on bail with one surety who meets specific conditions. The surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, provide a three-year tax clearance certificate, two recent passport photographs, and an affidavit of means.

The court found no evidence suggesting that Thomas would flee if granted bail. The judge has scheduled the trial to resume on February 21, 2025.

Thomas, a vocal human rights advocate, was arrested on December 13 at her home in Somolu, Lagos, following a Facebook post in which she allegedly stated that Seyi Tinubu would die before the end of 2024. She was subsequently transferred to Abuja and detained for several days without being formally charged.

She was finally arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 20. However, her bail application faced repeated delays, leading to her remand at the Suleja Custodial Centre until the recent court decision.

The Inspector General of Police is listed as the complainant in the case, which is filed under suit number F/HE/ARS/CR/636/2024. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the prosecution was notably absent during Monday’s bail hearing.

Thomas’ legal team, led by Dr. S. M. Oyeghe and J. A. Ekwe, successfully argued for her release, emphasizing her willingness to cooperate with the trial process.
