Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, following the recommendation of the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers. The announcement was made on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, during a press briefing in Ibadan.
Oyelade stated that Prince Owoade’s selection came after extensive consultations and the fulfillment of traditional rites overseen by the Oyomesi. “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi, and his appointment has been approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” he said. This development marks the culmination of a rigorous selection process to fill the revered stool left vacant since the passing of the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.
Speaking on the significance of the appointment, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, noted that the decision brings an end to months of socio-legal controversies surrounding the succession process. “This decision brings closure to the disputes that followed the transition of Oba Adeyemi. We urge everyone in Oyo State to unite and support the new Alaafin as we celebrate this historic event,” he remarked.
The state government expressed confidence that the new monarch’s reign would usher in a period of peace, unity, and progress for the Oyo Kingdom. “We are optimistic that Prince Owoade’s leadership will strengthen the legacy of the Alaafin institution and bring prosperity to the people of Oyo,” Oyelade added.
Residents of Oyo have been encouraged to rally behind the new monarch as he prepares to ascend the throne, symbolizing the beginning of a new era for the historic kingdom.
