The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has publicly apologized after admitting to making romantic advances toward a married staff member, Engineer Folasade Adebayo, who serves as the Deputy Director of Works and Services at the institution. This development comes after leaked audio recordings exposed the incident, sparking allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of office.

In the recordings, Professor Fasina is heard admitting to his actions, saying, “I apologize for making advances toward you. It was a mistake.” However, he also criticized Engineer Adebayo, accusing her of leaking their private conversations and calling her “toxic and dangerous.”

Engineer Adebayo confirmed the harassment allegations in September 2024 but stated that she needed to consult her family before releasing additional information. In a formal letter to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUOYE chapter, Adebayo requested an investigation into rumors and alleged harassment, while denying any involvement in immoral acts or petition writing.

“I humbly request that this respected union investigates the issue and saves me from further defamation and harassment,” she wrote in her letter.

The situation escalated further when the university’s registrar issued a query letter to Adebayo, accusing her of misconduct for allegedly being absent during the Vice-Chancellor’s visit to her office in July 2024. Adebayo denied the allegations, stating she had been unfairly targeted.

In response, SSANU FUOYE chapter has demanded a comprehensive investigation into Professor Fasina’s administration. The union’s joint statement accused the Vice-Chancellor of sexual harassment, staff victimization, abuse of office, and fostering a hostile work environment. They also called for greater transparency in the institution’s financial operations.

“The Vice-Chancellor’s actions have led to widespread staff intimidation and damaged confidence in the university’s leadership,” the union’s statement read.
