The government of South Sudan has lifted its temporary ban on Facebook and TikTok, imposed last week due to graphic videos circulating online.

The National Communications Authority confirmed that the images, which sparked violent protests and retaliatory killings, have been removed from the social media platforms.

According to Napoleon Adok Gai, director of the National Communications Authority, the rise of violence linked to social media content in South Sudan lends credence to the need for a balanced approach that addresses the root causes of online incitement while protecting the rights of the population.

The ban was initially put in place to curb the spread of inflammatory content.

However, with the removal of the offending images, the government has deemed it suitable to lift the suspension.

Mobile operators, MTN South Sudan and Zain South Sudan, have welcomed the lifting of the ban, thanking their customers for their patience.
