Ministry of Interior: Federal Marriage Registry

Toba Owojaiye reporting
Abuja, Nigeria

The Ministry of Interior generated approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its registries. Additionally, the ministry collected over N3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications, contributing to a 150% increase in overall revenue.

The Ministry of Interior oversees the administration of federal marriage registries across Nigeria, including locations in Lagos, Benin City, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Kano, Jos, Ibadan, Akure, Makurdi, Jalingo, Asaba, and Uyo.

These registries offer services such as the registration of ordinary and special marriages, issuance and re-issuance of secured federal marriage certificates, booking of marriage dates, and licensing of places of worship for conducting statutory marriages under the Marriage Act of 1963.

Truth Live News gathered that in terms of immigration enforcement, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) repatriated 828 foreigners to their respective countries in 2024. While specific offenses were not detailed, this action underscores the government’s commitment to regulating illegal immigration.

The NIS estimates that there are approximately 300,000 illegal immigrants in Nigeria, primarily from neighboring countries such as Chad, Niger, Benin, and Cameroon. The Nigerian constitution mandates that immigrants wishing to reside in the country must obtain proper residency permits.

These developments highlight the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance revenue through administrative services and maintain national security by addressing illegal immigration.
