The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its 79th meeting on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, to address the ongoing leadership crisis within the party and assess the state of the nation. The meeting, chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, focused on the lingering disputes within the National Working Committee (NWC) and the broader governance challenges under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

Truth Live News gathered that the BoT expressed deep concerns over unresolved disagreements within the NWC, particularly the dispute surrounding the office of the National Secretary, which has resulted in a legal battle. The Board urged all party leaders and stakeholders to set aside personal and sectional interests and prioritize the unity and stability of the PDP.

In a bid to resolve the crisis over the National Secretary position, the BoT established a committee led by Barr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) to engage with all parties involved, assess the situation, and provide recommendations for further action.

Acting National Chairman assured the BoT that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for February 2025, will proceed as planned to address internal conflicts and reaffirm the party’s commitment to unity, discipline, and democratic ideals.

On national governance, the BoT strongly criticized the APC-led administration for its handling of the economy and security, citing widespread hardship, social dislocation, and a growing sense of hopelessness among Nigerians. The Board attributed these challenges to the administration’s poorly conceived and implemented policies.

The BoT condemned the government’s multiple taxation policies, the continuous rise in fuel prices, increasing electricity tariffs, and higher telecommunication charges, describing them as insensitive and detrimental to businesses and the general populace.

The Board called for an immediate reversal of these policies and urged the government to adopt pro-people economic strategies aimed at stimulating production, creating jobs, and reviving the struggling economy.

Expressing solidarity with members of the party, the BoT extended condolences to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over the death of his elder brother and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed over the passing of his stepmother.

The BoT reassured members and the Nigerian public that the PDP remains a strong, united, and cohesive party committed to upholding democracy and improving the lives of citizens.

The PDP’s internal crisis has intensified in recent months, with the dispute over the National Secretary position exposing deep factional rifts within the party. Allegations of procedural violations in the selection process have led to court battles, heightening tensions among key stakeholders.

The BoT’s decision to intervene through the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) Committee is seen as a last-ditch effort to prevent further escalation. However, the upcoming NEC meeting in February will be a critical moment in determining whether the party can resolve its internal challenges or risk further division ahead of key electoral contests.
