Niger State Police Officer Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

A mobile police officer, Shafi’u Bawa, has reportedly taken his own life in Kontagora, Niger State.

Bawa, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force, was found hanging from the ceiling of his room on Saturday afternoon.

His father, Usman Bawa, discovered the lifeless body and immediately alerted the Kontagora police division.

Confirming the incident, Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

“On 8/2/2025 at about 2 p.m., it was reported that one ASP Shafi’u Bawa of 61 PMF Kontagora committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling due to a yet-to-be ascertained reason, Abiodun stated.

He added that Bawa’s remains have been released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
