The UK government has announced plans to ban individuals who provide significant support to the Russian state or have accumulated wealth through Russian connections.
This move is part of new sanctions set to be implemented, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The ban will also apply to individuals with access to high-level Russian government officials, including senior politicians, government officials, and businesspeople.
These measures aim to complement existing sanctions against Russian elites supporting President Vladimir Putin’s war efforts.
British Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized that the UK is unwelcome to Putin’s associates, stating, “The measures announced today slam the door shut to the oligarchs who have enriched themselves at the expense of the Russian people whilst bankrolling this illegal and unjustifiable war.”
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden in Washington on Thursday to discuss the Ukraine conflict.
Starmer’s visit follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s meeting at the White House on Monday.
Both leaders aim to convince the US to avoid rushing into a ceasefire deal with Putin and ensure Europe’s involvement in the process, as well as discuss military guarantees for Ukraine.
