As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) is calling on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of a bill aimed at reserving seats for women in parliament.

The party emphasized the need for women’s active engagement in politics and national development, as well as an end to discrimination and violence against women and girls.

The ZLP highlighted International Women’s Day as a global movement recognizing women’s achievements in various fields.

The party also stressed the importance of accelerating women’s rights, equality, and empowerment.

Nigeria’s failure to allocate the minimum 30% of seats for women in elective and appointive positions, as stipulated in the Beijing Declaration of 1995, has made the passage of this bill even more urgent.

“This delay has made the ongoing bill for special reserved seats for women in Parliament even more urgent,” the party stated.

The ZLP has urged lawmakers to pass the bill this year, describing it as a significant step forward in enhancing women’s political participation.

Chinyere Oge-Kalu, the ZLP’s National Woman Leader, emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “It is time to empower women and girls, end discrimination, and ensure inclusivity in governance.”
