Prof. Obi highlighted that the celebration began months earlier with a colloquium on UNICAL’s contributions to national development, followed by a meritorious service award ceremony for distinguished staff and an alumni roundtable discussion on repositioning the university for the future.

Challenges in Infrastructure and Expansion Needs

Despite the celebrations, the Vice Chancellor underscored the urgent need for infrastructure development. She noted that with a growing student population and curriculum expansion, UNICAL requires additional classrooms, hostels, and improved medical facilities. She also pointed out the need to prepare for the upcoming NUGA 2026 games, stressing the necessity of enhanced sporting facilities.

To address these challenges, a fundraising initiative will be part of the anniversary events, seeking support from alumni, corporate organizations, and well-wishers to improve campus facilities.

Convocation Highlights

This year’s convocation will see 13,610 students graduate across various programs, including 66 First Class graduates.

The event will also feature the investiture of three distinguished scholars as Emeritus Professors and the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on six prominent Nigerians, including government officials and business leaders.

The ceremony will conclude with a Thanksgiving Service on March 23, 2025, at St. Paul’s Parish, University of Calabar.

A Legacy of Excellence

As her tenure nears its end, Prof. Obi expressed pride in UNICAL’s achievements over the past five decades. She called on stakeholders to continue supporting the university’s vision for the future, ensuring its sustained growth and impact on national development.

“The word ‘Victory’ encapsulates our overall successes over the years,” she stated, emphasizing the resilience and academic excellence that define UNICAL’s legacy.

With a mix of celebrations, reflections, and strategic discussions, UNICAL @ 50 is poised to be a milestone event in the university’s history.
