Kano Emirate Mourns Loss of Oldest Councillor, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi

Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, the longest-serving member of the Kano Emirate Council and its most senior councillor, has passed away at the age of 92.

He died on April 1, 2025, in Kano after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy as a revered traditional leader.

Abbas Sanusi held the prestigious title of Galadiman Kano, the most senior position in the emirate council, which was conferred upon him by his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Born in 1933 in Bichi, Abbas Sanusi began his leadership journey in 1959 when his father, Emir Sanusi I, appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and district head of Ungogo.

He later rose to Dan Iyan Kano in 1962 under Emir Muhammadu Inuwa and was elevated to Wambai of Kano during Emir Ado Bayero’s reign.

Abbas Sanusi pursued his early education at Kofar Kudu Elementary School in 1944 and later attended Kano Middle School (now Rumfa College) in 1948.

He is survived by his children, including Abdullahi Abbas, the current chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The funeral prayer for Abbas Sanusi is set to take place at Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
