The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ondo/Ekiti Command, has successfully intercepted over 140 sacks of Cannabis sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp, weighing more than 1,400 kilograms and valued at N112 million.
The consignment was seized while being transported by two suspects in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, following a tip-off received by NCS operatives.
NCS Comptroller, Mrs. Morenikeji Bewaji, revealed that the suspects absconded after being granted bail on health grounds, but their surety, Mr. Victor Ayodeji, has been arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution.
The Comptroller expressed concern over the high volume of illicit drugs, particularly cannabis sativa, in the country, highlighting its threat to society, fueling of criminal activities and insecurity, and undermining of socio-economic stability.
The suspects and the seized drugs have been handed over to the state command of the NDLEA.
This interception showcases the efforts of the NCS in combating drug trafficking and abuse in the country, similar to the work of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in intercepting dangerous substances like fentanyl.
