The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, leading the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, has issued a stern warning to the Tinubu administration to curb the relentless killings plaguing the North.
Speaking at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting in Maiduguri, themed “Enhanced Security As Panacea For Stability and Development of the North,” the Sultan expressed frustration over the unabated violence, declaring, “Enough is enough.”
The Sultan highlighted the emotional toll on traditional rulers, who are “saddened” by the senseless deaths of innocent citizens.
He condemned the lack of progress despite repeated public outcries, questioning, “How many times do we need to condemn these killings before our political leaders and security agencies stop or reduce the insecurity?” Citing recent atrocities, including over 100 deaths in Plateau and attacks in Sokoto and Kebbi, he urged for decisive action and cautioned against ethnic or religious profiling of criminals.
The meeting, attended by monarchs, political leaders, and security officials, addressed the resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno, with Governor Babagana Zulum noting recent insurgent attacks displacing military formations. Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Zulum, emphasized youth empowerment and agriculture as critical to regional stability.
The Inspector General of Police, represented by AIG Kenechikwu Onwuemelie, pledged a collaborative approach to security.
The Sultan clarified that traditional rulers aim to support, not compete with, state governors.
Behind closed doors, the council deliberated on strategies to tackle the crisis, with the Sultan expressing hope that “Almighty Allah will give us the strength” to defeat insurgents. He urged Nigerians to remain resilient, noting that insecurity is a global challenge, but stressed the urgent need to address the alarming rate of violence nationwide.
