Supreme Court Reveals Date To Hear Arguments on Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Suit

The US Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for May 15 to consider President Donald Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship, a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

The case revolves around Trump’s executive order, issued on January 20, which aimed to limit birthright citizenship for children born to parents in the United States illegally or on temporary visas.

Multiple federal judges have blocked the order, deeming it unconstitutional, with District Judge John Coughenour stating that birthright citizenship is “a fundamental constitutional right”.

The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution provides that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside”.

Trump’s order was premised on the idea that individuals in the US illegally or on a visa are not subject to the jurisdiction of the country, and therefore, their children born in the US should not be granted citizenship.

The Supreme Court’s decision in this case could have significant implications for immigration policy and citizenship rights in the United States.

If the court rules in favor of Trump, it could potentially alter the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment and impact the citizenship status of thousands of individuals born in the US to immigrant parents.
